Gaiman Writing Quotes

Neil Gaiman. Many words come to mind. Sandman. Stardust. Magical. Original. He gave the all-time great commencement speech on May 17th, 2012. It’s worth a read and a listen. I try to take it in at least once a month. It’s really that good. If only he had an audiobook reciting a few of these quotes:

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

“What power would Hell have if those imprisoned there were not able to dream of Heaven?”

“Tomorrow may be hell, but today was a good writing day, and on the good writing days nothing else matters.”

“The world always seems brighter when you’ve just made something that wasn’t there before.”

And my favorite:

“The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can.”

Notes:

  • I must really love this speech. I’ve written about its contents a couple of times now. Funny how the mind works in circles often coming back to important topics such as creativity. Used the same picture for both posts.
