The Perfect Desk

For years, I’ve been on the quest to find the perfect desk. Antique stores. Auctions. Amish outlets. I built the one I’m sitting at today. It’s made of oak, sanded, and stained. I didn’t want drawers, no places for the writing demons to hide. Instead, I drilled in a set of hooks to hold my camera and spare messenger bag. For now, it works but is far from perfect.

The most enjoyable part of my day is when my son comes upstairs to visit after school. We talk about his day. Dinner plans. The latest video game or song he’s working on. Yesterday, I came across this cartoon about Stephen King’s desk. I smiled. As usual, the creator of Castle Rock nails it. He’s such a great storyteller. This is worth a look.

Other quotes from King:

“The road to hell is paved with adverbs.”

“If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time or the tools to write.”

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There’s no way around these two things that I’m aware of, no shortcut.”
